Many people around the world make the Borobudur Temple as a place that must be visited in his life. Many theories that attempt to explain the origin of the word Borobudur. One of them states that the name is probably derived from the word Sambharabhudhara, which means "mountain" (bhudara) where the slopes are located terraces. In addition there are several other folk etymology. Suppose Borobudur word derived from the words "the Buddha" is due to shift the sound becomes Borobudur. Another explanation is that the word is derived from the word bara Borobudur and budur. Bara / vihara means temple complex and budur or beduhur means above or hill. So, Borobudur could be interpreted as a temple complex located on the hill.

Borobudur Temple building area is 123 x 123 m with a building height of 34.5 m and has 1460 reliefs, 504 Buddha statues, and 72 stupas. Borobudur has 10 levels (representing ten Bodhisattva levels which must pass to reach the perfection of the Buddha). The 10 levels consists of 6 levels of a square, circular level 3 circular and a main stupa as a peak. From the information that writers get, it turns out in Borobudur Temple contained an ancient lake that has a width of approximately 8 kilometers. And it was about 10 thousand years ago or Kala Late Pleistocene. The lake was lost due to natural processes and non-naturally due to the silting process. Can be observed from lake sediment covering material that is the result of volcanic activity, tectonic movement period of soil and rock, as well as human activity. Even the environmental footprint of the lake also can be traced from the temple reliefs and troponin which indicate the presence of a lake environment.
